Veep debates draw attention

Let me talk a little bit about the recent Vice Presidential debates. OK I know, I know you're asking: what is a commentary on politics doing in an entertainment blog? Well why not? At least since the TV became a staple in America's culture, politics and the show business has been very closely intertwined. Celebrities and politicians draw rating alike, with the more media savvy ones getting the love from the viewers.

Just recently, we had Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska and Senator Joe Biden of Delaware duke it out onstage. It was one of the most watched VP debates in history and as a political junkie I can see why. With a significant portion of the population believing our nation to be in trouble, I expect folks to be concerned about the plans of their next leaders. Another reason for all the excitement though probably has to do with the backgrounds of Gov. Palin and Sen. Biden. Palin, a greenhorn in national politics, has been drawing curiosity among many people. Biden, meanwhile, who has been dubbed the "gaffe machine" is known for his fiery tongue and no-BS straight talk.

Both Biden and Palin stood their ground, although Biden's experience made him a clear winner. To Palin's credit, however, I agree with CNN's assessment that she has "lived naother day". She carried herself well and was very poised, but stopped short of actually making a significant change in public opinion, which ahs been favoring the Obama-Biden ticket.

Nonetheless, it was a good debate (though with less fireworks than I expected), and I hope that Americans would be better educated to vote this November.
